Scottish Highland Dance
with Nat (13+) *NEW CLASS ALERT!
Join Nat in an introductory exploration of Highland dance, a style of traditional Scottish/Gaelic dance with balletic influences. This class will work through core movements and traditional dances teaching both the steps and lore surrounding them. Highland dance is an athletic style with lots of jumping. A portion of class will be dedicated to stretching, strengthening and injury prevention.
Recommended attire: Ballet flats or socks, shorts or leggings. Loose pants are discouraged as they will get in the way of certain movements.
(Spring) Thursdays 7:30 PM - 9:00 PM
-
Developed in the 19th and 20th centuries in the Scottish Highlands, Highland dance is a competitive and performance style of dance practiced around the world. While it originated from Gaelic folk dances, it has technical influences from ballet that modernized it into a relatively structured style. It is danced on the balls of the feet with rhythmic jumping, complex footwork and synchronized arm and head movements.
There are four core traditional “highland” dances, eight “national” dances and two character dances that are used in competition and done to bagpipe tunes. There are many other dances with bagpipe tunes that are used for performances. Additionally, choreographies are created by combining traditional movements and steps to all sorts of celtic and modern music. These are used in performances and, more modernly, in choreography competitions.
While Highland dance has Scottish and Gaelic historical significance, it is open to all to practice, perform and compete in.
Flamenco
with Rachel Sidles (13+)
This is an essential for class for all dance students interested in deepening their understanding of dance studies in the West and East. Every seven weeks, the grouping will present a different genre from various parts of the world.
For Drop-In students, we strongly recommend committing to a block of seven weeks to avoid missing previously taught material and information.

Pop n’ Lock

Hip Hop dance is a historical and influential dance genre that started in the “Boogie-Down” Bronx, New York, in the 1970s. The genre is inherently American. It began within the African-American and Latino communities in NYC. Join us as we groove and investigate this NYC-born art form!
This class will follow a warm-up and center combination format that will build over time. Classes may vary in style from the late 80s to today's contemporary movement.
(Spring) Mondays 7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
-
Suggested age: 11+ years
Attire: Relaxed clothing and clean rubber-soled shoes.
Mr. Morgan has been dancing for 20 years now and teaching for over a decade, with his focus being in Hip-hop and urban choreography. Adult Drop-In Class
The Open Contemporary class focuses on allowing students to find ways of expressing and exploring their own bodies while following a traditional class structure. We look to see what movement is accessible in our own body while exploring ideas such as weight, flow, and connective tissue. This class is molded to be welcoming for all bodies, abilities, and experiences. This class is also an Integrated Dance Class, welcoming dancers and movers with and without disabilities to come share a space to explore. Cody uses his experience with the Dancing Wheels Methodology when approaching lesson plans.
Ballet Basics
with Annie deVuono (13+)
This class is perfect for those who haven’t attended a ballet class since childhood! We take pleasure in welcoming back students with patience and grace. Keeping the Beginning to Intermediate Ballet student in mind, there’s an emphasis on the fundamental principles of classical dance: leg rotation, posture, balance, and weight transfer.
We encourage questions so that all attendees receive as much feedback from the instructor as they seek. This class provides a safe and inclusive environment for exploration and the joy of motion!

If an absence must occur, please contact the front desk at 206-325-4161 and staff@spectrumdance.org.
We are implementing the following guidelines for unexcused absences:
After two unexcused absences within a session, the School of Spectrum Dance Theater will notify the parent/guardian and issue a warning that their student has only one unexcused absence left.
After the third unexcused absence, the student will automatically be removed from the end-of-year All School Demonstration. There is a possibility of a production fee refund.
We will provide a refund/class credit for the absences that are validated as excused. i.e, if a licensed practitioner’s medical note is presented.
-
While we recognize that delays are unavoidable occasionally, arrival to class beyond 10 minutes is cause for injury and a disruption to the class. If you know your student will be late to class, please notify the front desk at 206-325-4161 and staff@spectrumdance.org.
It is left to the instructor’s discretion whether or not to admit late arrivals into class. We may ask late students to sit, observe the class, and take notes. Repeated tardiness is subject to a meeting with the School Director and instructor.
-
Students are no longer permitted to use the conference room unless specified. Students are required to change and encouraged to store their belongings in the locker rooms.
Lockers are available for this purpose. We do not provide locks. Personal items may not be left overnight. A new area will be designated as a student lounge for those with multiple classes in one day.
