SUMMER 2024 AT SPECTRUM

Donald Byrd Workshop

July 15-19, 2024

Ages 16+ 

The workshop age requirement is 16 and up with the equivalent level of intermediate dance training, e.g., ballet, modern dance, or hip hop.

Cost: $425 for the week Workshop Class and Process/ $375 early bird paid by 4/30 

$85 for the week of Technique Class – $20 Drop-In Rate Technique Class Only 

The Donald Byrd Pre-professional and Professional Workshop is for pre-professional and professional dancers ages 16 and up. The daily work session runs from 11:30 am – 4:30 pm PST.

The workshop consists of a 2-hour and 15-minute technique class and a 2-hour and 15-minute  process/repertory session with a half-hour break midway through the day. Technique class focuses on Mr. Byrd’s movement aesthetics. It emphasizes a relaxed, strong, and flexible torso with highly articulated feet and legs with increasing rhythmic and spatial exactness. With this focus, the dancer becomes more efficient in managing energy and more able to control the visual, emotional, and physical impact of their body moving.

  1. One Letter of Recommendation from a Present or Past Dance Instructor
  2. The interested participant must submit a short statement explaining why they dance and want to participate in this workshop and/or join the company.

Summer Enrollment Classes

June 2024 – August 2024

Creative Toddlers Movement

Friday, June 28, July 5, 12, 19, and 26

Ages 3-4.5 | 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Cost: $75 for five weeks of one-hour classes / $18 Drop-In Rate

Our “toddler & grown-up” class is fun for 3 to 4.5-year-olds and grown up, too!

Join this parent/guardian participation class with your young one. You and your young one will have a great time bonding, learning, growing, and dancing while utilizing principles of The BrainDance developed by Seattle’s Creative Dance Center founder Anne Green Gilbert and traditional dance methods. A parent or guardian is required to participate. Please dress comfortably and be ready to have some fun!

Saturday Ballet with Miss Heather

FOUR Saturdays in July: July 6, July 13, July 20, and July 27

Time: 9 am, 10 am, and 11 am

Cost: $75 for four weeks of 1-hr classes

These are four weeks of beautiful movement. Students love Saturday ballet classes with the exceptional Ms. Heather!

Join her for Pre-Ballet, Ballet I, and Ballet II classes. New students are welcome! Returning students, please register under your 2024-2025 level.

Pre-Ballet | 9:00 am – 10:00 am (ages 5-7)

Previous experience is optional. Ballet slippers are required. 

Ballet I | 10:00 am – 11:00 am (ages 7-9)

Students learn the basic ballet positions of the feet and arms at this level. In addition, students will develop the basic principles of turnout, leg stability, and torso strength. This level also focuses on creativity to avoid overload and not inhibit the student’s joy, spirit, and individuality. For children ages 7-9. Previous experience is optional. Ballet slippers are required.  

Ballet II | 11:00 am – 12:00 pm (ages 9-11)

Students develop musical skills and preparation for movement at this level. They learn the basic patterns of body facings and the basic etiquette of barre and center exercises. Students begin to develop knowledge of essential musicality, which includes adagio and petit allegro. For children ages 9-11. Prior experience and placement into this level are required. Ballet slippers are required.

Summer Camps & Intensives

June 2024 – August 2024

Dance Day Camp

Week 1: June 24- 28 | Week 2: July 1, 2, 3 and 5

Ages 5-7 | 8:45 am – 12:00 pm 

Cost: $300 for Week 1 – $250 early bird paid by 4/30
$240 for Week 2 – $190 early bird paid by 4/30

These two weeks provide a great entry point for our young community members to experience and discover all The School of Spectrum Dance Theater offers.

Through encouragement, praise, care, creativity, and fun, young students get their first taste of expressive movement and all its benefits. Friendships and memorable lessons are sure to highlight their encounter.

Pack a water bottle and light snack, and get ready to have fun!

Please only pack necessities for each day. Water, Light Snack, Light Sweater in case of chilly rooms, and ONLY if owned a pair of dance slippers. The latter is not required.

Dance Sampler

July 1, 2, 3 and 5 

Ages 8 -12 | 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm

Cost: $300 for the four days/ $250 early bird paid by 4/30

This week allows young, new, and curious movers to sample various dance styles with Spectrum Dance Theater instructors. Students experience the basics in styles ranging from ballet and jazz to modern while making new friends and staying active during the summer—every day’s schedule brims with three dance styles.
Please pack a water bottle and a light snack to nibble on between classes.

Please only pack necessities for each day. Water, Light Snack, Light Sweater in case of chilly rooms, and ONLY, if owned, a pair of dance slippers. Students will be dancing barefoot as well as possibly tap dancing. Hard-soled shoes are best for this class.

Summer Intensive

July 8-12

Ages 12-18 | 11:30 am – 4:30 pm

Intermediate/ Ballet III-IV (ages 12-14)

Advanced/ Ballet V- VII/ (ages 14-18)

Cost: $425 for the week/ $350 early bird paid by 4/30

The School of Spectrum Dance Theater Summer Intensive allows students to train in various dance styles. Students have the option to take classes either in person or online.

Students begin their day with Ballet class to deepen their knowledge of classical vocabulary. After lunch, students engage in styles such as Byrd Contemporary Technique, Conditioning, Contemporary, Jazz, Hip Hop, Choreography, Improv, and Pilates.

Please pack a water bottle, lunch, long sleeves, sweatpants, cotton socks, and knee pads, if owned, for possible floor work. Clean-soled sneakers are also necessary for conditioning and possible hip-hop classes.

Summer Pre-Teen-Tensive

July 8-12

Ages 9-12 | 4:00 pm – 6:30 pm

Cost: $225 FULL Week /$175 early bird paid by 4/30

Ballet II & III/ Beginner Intermediate

SSDT Summer Tween-Tensive presents young and aspiring dancers with a week of immersive dance training to provide an inclusive space for youth to concentrate on their technique and craft. Students begin their daily study with 75 minutes of either of the following classes.

Ballet | to deepen the focused student’s knowledge of classical vocabulary.

Donald Byrd Contemporary Technique | to sharpen the focused student’s ability to work in a highly technical manner

Conditioning for Dance | to strengthen and balance the under and overused muscles of the focused student’s body

Afterward, students will engage in two or three genres: Jazz, Hip Hop, Global Dance, and Improv.

We invite parents and guardians to observe what students learned over the week at 5:30 pm on Friday, July 12th.

Please pack a water bottle. Clean-soled sneakers are also necessary for conditioning and possible hip-hop classes.

Drama/Dance Camp

July 22-26

Ages 7-18 | 10:00 am – 4:00 pm

Cost: $425 for the week/ $350 early bird paid by 4/30

Drama Dance Camp presents a unique experience that widens the lens of performance and teaches young students how to delve further into storytelling.

Students create a dramatic dance performance of a select story illustrating a moral using acting, dancing, improvisation, theater games, storytelling, and mask-making.

We invite family and friends on the last day of camp for a presentation of the work.
All experience levels are welcome.

Open-Level + Drop In Classes

Fitness for Living (FFL) with Angie Bolton** (Hybrid***)

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays

Time: 9 am – 10 am

Cost: $10 Senior* and $12.50 Non-Senior Drop-In Rate

Fitness For Living (FFL) is a fun-filled, socially engaging fitness class for The School of Spectrum Dance Theater’s community seniors. ACE Certified Group

Fitness Instructor and class creator Angie Bolton safely leads students through cardio and bodyweight resistance work. You will move, sweat, and feel great!

There’s no need for special equipment if students take the class remotely! Instead, grab two cans of soup or beans if you don’t have weights. Angie will provide meticulous instructions if you have hand weights and bands at home. You will need a hand towel for stretching (and sweating) and water.

Please bring a yoga mat if you are attending class in person. SSDT no longer provides them for hygienic reasons.
Please pack a water bottle. Clean-soled sneakers are preferred. Please wipe your shoe bottoms if worn outdoors.

Saturday Open Level Contemporary

July 6, July 13, July 20, and July 27

Rotating Faculty | Ages 15+

Time: 3:00 pm – 4:30 pm

Cost: $75 for four weeks / $21 Drop-In Rate

Taught by a rotating faculty, we will consistently challenge our adult students in this ever-evolving dance genre.

Prior ballet knowledge is necessary. Advanced-level ballet is ideal.

Class Size Requirement: A minimum of SIX students registered by 9 a.m. on the day of class is necessary. SSDT will notify families in the morning in case of cancellation.

What is CONTEMPORARY DANCE Anyway?
Contemporary dance is a genre that incorporates a variety of dance styles, from ballet to hip-hop. Its movement can vary from flowing floorwork to dancing upright with leg and foot precision. With little restriction, students are encouraged to explore their movement, eliciting an emotional response from the watcher. The universal language of contemporary dance tells stories, fictional or not.

Tuesday Open Ballet Basics

Time: 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm

Ages 15+

Cost: $75 for four weeks / $21 Drop-In Rate

This is perfect for those who haven’t attended a ballet class since childhood!

We take pleasure in welcoming the student back with patience and grace. Keeping the Beginning to Intermediate Ballet student in mind, there’s an emphasis on the fundamental principles of classical dance: leg rotation, posture, balance, and weight transfer. We encourage questions so that all attendees receive as much instructor feedback as they seek. This class provides a safe and inclusive environment for exploration and the joy of motion!

Tuesday and Thursday Adult Jazz with Jerry Tassin**

Time: 10 am – 11:30 am

Cost: $60 for four classes/ $15 Senior Drop-In Rate* and $18 Non-Senior Drop-In Rate

Join this classic Jazz class based on the timeless Luigi technique! The incredible Jerry Tassin guides participants through the stylized warm-up and general stretching of hamstrings, backs, necks, and arms, along with some abdominal work.

Every class has different dance combinations, using every pop, jazz, or theater music genre. Expect to sweat, move fluidly, and express your artistry!
Beginner to intermediate dance experience is necessary.

Class Size Requirement: A minimum of SIX students registered by 9 a.m. on the day of class is necessary. SSDT will notify families in the morning in case of cancellation.

Saturday Mini Hip Hop Choreography with Avery Gardner

July 6, July 13, July 20, and July 27

Ages 6-9 |12:30 pm – 1:30 pm

Cost: $60 for four weeks / $18 Drop-In Rate

This age and level-appropriate class teaches simple and stylized grooves that lead to fun choreography. The variety of movement keeps the young student’s mind active while learning about a great American dance form.

Class Size Requirement: A minimum of SIX students registered by 9 a.m. on the day of class is necessary. SSDT will notify families in the morning in case of cancellation.

Saturday Pre/Teen Hip Hop Choreography with Avery Gardner

July 6, July 13, July 20, and July 27

Ages 10-18 | 1:15 pm – 2:45 pm

Cost: $60 for four weeks / $18 Drop-In Rate

This age and level-appropriate class teaches simple to more detailed and complex grooves that lead to fun choreography. As the students grow stronger cognitively, combinations also become more intricate and dynamic.

Class Size Requirement: A minimum of SIX students registered by 9 a.m. on the day of class is necessary. SSDT will notify families in the morning in case of cancellation.

Saturday Adult Hip Hop Choreography with Avery Gardner

July 6, July 13, July 20, and July 27

Ages 18+ | 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Cost: $60 for four weeks / $18 Drop-In Rate

Adult students can expect grooves that eventually lead to choreography. This class is for adults with minimal dance experience but wanting to learn hip-hop. Our no-judgmental environment encourages students to learn and unlock their inner dancers.

Accomplishments to expect are chuckles, smiles, joy, sweat, and a short dance combination by the end of the class.

What is Hip Hop Dance?

Hip Hop dance is a historical and influential dance genre that started in the “Boogie-Down” Bronx, New York, in the 1970s. The genre is inherently American. It began within the African-American and Latino communities in NYC.

Join us as we groove and investigate this NYC-born art form! This class will follow the format of a warm-up and a center combination that will build over time. Classes may vary in style from the late 80s to the contemporary movement of today.

Free Dance Day! Dance For ALL

Saturday, June 29

Ages 10 & up

12:00 pm – 3:00 pm, four 45min sessions

Cost: FREE!!!! Sign up for one class, two classes, or all four classes!

Dance For All is a day of free dance class for our community.

Begin your summer with us in a vibrant exchange with Spectrum Dance Theater Artists and Instructors. Open to youth and adults (ages 10 & up), Dance For All participants will explore dance as a medium for self-expression and connection. Join us as we share in movement, rhythm, and community. We welcome students of all levels; no prior dance experience is necessary.

**Classes are free/donation-based, with a suggested donation of $10 per class. No one turned away for lack of funds.
