SUMMER 2022 AT SPECTRUM

DANCE DAY CAMP

June 20 - 24 & June 27 - July 1

9:00 AM – 12:00 PM  Ages 5-7

Cost: In-Person option ONLY $300 for the week ($250 early bird paid by 4/30)

The PERFECT chance for ALL families in the community to benefit from the arts and to discover all that The School of Spectrum Dance Theater has to give. Students will learn new dance styles, including ballet, jazz, and modern, which are offered year-round in The School.

DANCE SAMPLER

JUNE 27 - JULY 1

1:00 PM – 4:00 PM Ages 8-12

Cost: In-Person $300 for the week ($250 early bird paid by 4/30), Virtual $270 for the week ($220 early bird paid by 4/30)

An opportunity for young, new, and curious movers to sample a wide variety of dance styles and Spectrum Dance Theater instructors. Students will experience the basics in styles ranging from ballet and jazz to modern while making new friends and staying active during the summer.

SATURDAY BALLET WITH MISS HEATHER

JULY 2 – 30

Cost: IN-PERSON $75 for five weeks/VIRTUAL $67.50 for five weeks, $18 for Virtual Drop-In only

The School of Spectrum Dance Theater is excited to announce weekly Saturday IN-PERSON/VIRTUAL ballet classes with the exceptional Ms. Heather! Join her for Pre-Ballet, Ballet I, and Ballet II classes. Students have the option to take classes either in person or online. New students are welcome! Returning students, please register under your 2021-2022 level.

Pre-Ballet | 9A - 10A | Ages 5-7

Students explore the introductory stage of basic ballet skills and vocabulary with encouragement, praise, care, creativity, and fun, while increasing their cognitive development. For children ages 5-7. No previous experience necessary. Ballet slippers are required.

Ballet I | 10A - 11A | Ages 7-9

At this level, students begin to learn the basic ballet positions of the feet and arms. Students will develop the basic principles of turn out, stability of the leg, and strength of the torso. This level also focuses on creativity in order to avoid overload and as to not inhibit the student’s joy, spirit, and individuality. For children ages 7-9. No previous experience necessary. Ballet slippers are required.

Ballet II | 11A - 12P | Ages 9-11

At this level, students develop musical skills and preparation of movement. They learn the basic patterns of body facings as well as the basic etiquette of barre and center exercises. Students begin to develop knowledge of basic musicality including adagio and petit allegro. For children ages 9-11. Prior experience and placement into this level are required. Ballet slippers are required.

LITTLE BYRDS

JUNE 20 - 24

1:00P – 4:00P | AGES 9 – 13

Cost: FULL WORKSHOP class and process in-person $400 for the week ($325 Early Bird paid by 4/30)

The Little Byrd IN-PERSON Pre-Professional Workshop is for focused dancers aged 9-13. The week-long daily workshop runs from 1pm- 4pm PST.
The workshop consists of a 1.5-hour technique class followed by 2 hours of select repertory/process and dance history. A supervised fifteen-minute snack break will follow the technique portion of the day.

An informal presentation of material learned will be recorded and shared with the students’ families, on the final day of the workshop.

 
Technique class focuses on Mr. Byrd’s movement aesthetics and emphasizes a relaxed, strong, and flexible torso with highly articulated feet and legs, and increasing rhythmic and spatial exactness. With this focus, the student becomes more efficient in the management of energy and more able to control the visual, emotional, and physical impact of their body moving. This experience will offer the young student more tools to use in their dance training.

DRAMA/DANCE CAMP

JULY 25 - 29

10:00A – 4:00P | AGES 7 – 18

Cost: In-Person Only $425 for the week ($350 early bird paid by 4/30)

In this camp, students will use acting, dancing, improvisation, theater games, and storytelling to create a dramatized performance based on fables from all over the world. A performance will be presented on the last day of camp for family and friends. All experience levels are welcome.

SUMMER INTENSIVE

JULY 5 – 8 | Ages 11-18 | 11:30AM - 4:30PM

The School of Spectrum Dance Theater’s IN-PERSON/ VIRTUAL Summer Intensive is for dancers ages 11-18 (Intermediate Ballet level III-IV 11-14yrs, Advanced Ballet V+ 14-18yrs.)

Cost: IN-PERSON $425 for the week ($350 early bird paid by 4/30), VIRTUAL $375 for the week ($300 early bird paid by 4/30) 

The School of Spectrum Dance Theater Summer Intensive is an IN-PERSON/VIRTUAL opportunity for students to train in a wide variety of dance styles. Students have the option to take the class in person or online. Students begin their day with Ballet class to deepen their knowledge of the classical vocabulary. After lunch, students engage in styles such as Byrd, Contemporary Fusion, Jazz, Hip Hop, Conditioning, and Pilates.

DONALD BYRD WORKSHOP

JULY 11 – 15 & JULY 18 - 22 | 11:00A - 4:00P

The Donald Byrd IN-PERSON/VIRTUAL Workshop is for pre-professional and professional dancers ages 14 and up.

The daily workshop is 11:00 am – 4:00 pm PDT. The workshop consists of a 2-hour technique class followed by 2.5 hours of process/repertory. Technique class focuses on Mr. Byrd’s movement aesthetics and emphasizes a relaxed, strong, and flexible torso with highly articulated feet and legs, and increasing rhythmic and spatial exactness. With this focus, the dancer becomes more efficient in the management of energy and more able to control the visual, emotional, and physical impact of their body moving.

Workshop Costs:

    • Full Workshop (Technique and Process)
      • In-Person is $425 for the week ($350 Early Bird paid by 4/30)
      • Virtual $375 for the week ($300 Early Bird Paid by 4/30)
    • Technique Class Only (In-Person and Virtual)
      • $85 for the week
    • Technique Class (Drop-In, Virtual Rate)
      • $20 per class

2022/23 SEASON COMPANY AUDITION

JULY 23 | 12:00P - 3:00P

Under the direction of Donald Byrd, Spectrum Dance Theater is seeking dancers for the 2022-2023 Season.  

Full-time company contracts, including weekly salary and touring opportunities. Relocation to Seattle, WA is required for the duration of the contract. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and able to work legally in the USA.The in-person audition is at Spectrum Dance Theater in Seattle, WA on July 23, 2022. The audition is invite-only. 

To receive an invitation to audition, please register for the Donald Byrd Workshop OR send an email to spectrumaudition@gmail.com and include the following:

  • Name, Address, Phone Number
  • Headshot and Resume
  • A video of group or solo performance and a video that includes partnering. Videos can be in-studio or on stage; please make certain you are clearly identified.

Please upload videos no later than June 27; Vimeo (no password) and Youtube links preferred. Upon submission of your video, Artistic Director Donald Byrd will select dancers to attend the in-person audition on July 23. 

DONALD BYRD WORKSHOP

Spectrum Dance Theater will host its annual Donald Byrd Workshop from July 11-15 & July 18 – 22 in Seattle, WA. By taking the workshop, you will automatically receive an invitation to the audition on July 23.

Donald Byrd’s process requires that dancers have a willingness to work collaboratively and are technically proficient. Therefore, it is highly encouraged that interested applicants attend this workshop leading up to the audition. About 90% of dancers hired to the Spectrum Company have attended the Byrd Workshop. This audition is not only for company positions but also for casting Donald Byrd’s The Harlem Nutcracker performances in December of 2022. If you plan to attend the Byrd Workshop, please indicate so with your submission.
