The Miraculous Mandarin

Thursdays-Saturdays
May 17-19 & May 24-26
8pm
Hing Hay Park, S. King Street & Maynard Ave. S.
International District, Seattle
FREE performance

Composer Bela Bartok’s self-described “grotesque pantomime”—repeatedly  banned throughout his lifetime—is remolded as theatrical pulp fiction. The line between eroticism and savagery is blurred in this twisted fable of an outsider’s tragic fate at the hands of a band of drug addicted thugs and their seductive moll. This tale of vice, violence, and voyeurism gone awry will be set in the historic Bush Hotel, overlooking Hing Hay Park in Seattle’s International District/Chinatown.

Seating can be reserved by clicking here.

Performances are 1 hour and will be followed by an audience discussion at IDEA Space just off Hing Hay Park. ADVISORY: The performance is not intended for children.

Thanks to the Seattle Chinatown-International District Public Development Authority, Storefronts Seattle, and the Wing Luke Museum for their support of this presentation. This performance is presented at no cost through support from the Nesholm Family Foundation.

“Miraculous Mandarin: Behind the scenes historic tour”

Wing Luke Museum, 719 S. King Street, Seattle
Tickets $12.95. Limited capacity.
Purchase tickets online or by phone 206-325-4161.

The confluence of details from the story of the Miraculous Mandarin, a seedy cast of characters in a gritty neighborhood that brings visitors from around the world, is coincidentally reflected in the location of this presentation.  The performance of The Miraculous Mandarin will take place in the historic Bush Hotel in Seattle’s Chinatown-International District.

Spectrum Dance Theater sees this as a chance to explore the history of the neighborhood, one of Seattle’s oldest and most culturally and racially diverse areas.  In partnership with the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience, we are offering Spectrum audience members an opportunity to tour the Freeman Hotel in the West Kong Yick Building, an historic tenement in the neighborhood.
