Our Work in the Community

STG - Dance for Parkinsons

The mission of The School of Spectrum Dance Theater and Community Outreach Programs is

  • To provide expert dance instruction in diverse dance forms to all.
  • To educate the community about dance as an art form and as a social/civic instrument.

Spectrum’s Community Outreach Programs provide dance classes, access, education and services that contribute to the health and wellbeing of the community at large.

The Community Outreach programs that Spectrum offers are:

IN SCHOOL (one day or year-long)

Exploration in the Classroom

Grades K-5th

Through the discipline of dance, participating students will explore the elements of space, time and energy. By working in collaboration with their classmates and the teaching artist, the classroom becomes a setting for exploration, creativity, imagery and in-action learning as students delve into matters of science, math, reading and social studies. At the end of the Creative Dance program, there is an opportunity for students to present what they learned.

Dances of Western and Southern Africa

Grades 2-12

This dance program allows students the opportunity to journey to the southern and western regions of Africa, learning the culture, rhythms and dances from native artists. They will learn how music and dance is a part of the everyday lives of the people of those beautiful regions of the world. The program will culminate in a performance that demonstrates the students developing skills.

Contemporary Dance

Grades 5-12

Spectrum’s contemporary dance program teaches the fundamentals of contemporary dance as well as components of ballet to introduce and support technicality, creativity and expression in an engaging and fun way. During the course of this program students will explore and create their own choreographical phrases, using the fundamentals learned and explored and the use of dance composition. At the end of the program, students will have the opportunity to present their work in a featured performance.

Hip Hop or Break Dance

Grades 5-12

This dance program takes students on a journey of hip Hop dance, the culture, as well as the history of Hip Hop and how it was created and developed.  Topics explored are Break Dance, Graffiti, MC’ing and DJ’ing. Clean and conscious music is always used in this program. At the end of the program students will present their work in a high energy, upbeat performance that is sure to have you dancing in your seats!

After School Programs

Whether it’s Creative Dance, Dances of Southern and Western Africa, Hip Hop, Contemporary or Jazz Dance, Spectrum’s after school dance programs are sure to get your students moving and learning in engaging and fun ways!  All levels of dance ability are welcome.

Dance Field Trips

Grades 4-College Level

On the beautiful shores of Lake Washington is where this workshop happens. Come to Spectrum studios for workshops and/or lecture demonstrations with our professional company, Spectrum Dance Theater.  The first hour is spent exploring the fundamentals of contemporary dance with one of our company members in engaging ways.  Students will then spend the last half hour observing a Spectrum Dance Theater rehearsal lead by our Artistic Director Donald Byrd.
